Ramos Research Institute Executive Director Presents Preliminary Study on Cancel Culture at National Conference

WASHINGTON, D.C. – February 26, 2025 — Alejandro J. Ramos, Executive Director of the Ramos Research Institute (RRI), recently presented his preliminary study at the Pi Sigma Alpha National Research Conference in Washington, D.C. His paper, titled "Balancing Speech and Accountability: The Influence of Cancel Culture on Student Life," explores the prevalence and impact of cancel culture on U.S. college campuses, with a focus on its effects on free speech, social interactions, and student well-being.

Based on initial survey data from college students across the country, the study examines how cancel culture shapes campus dialogue—both fostering accountability and contributing to self-censorship. By analyzing the intersection of social media dynamics, public accountability, and institutional culture, this research provides early insights into the challenges and opportunities that cancel culture presents within academic environments.

"This study is an important first step in understanding how cancel culture influences student experiences," said Ramos. "As this research evolves, we hope to provide a clearer picture of how universities can foster open discourse while addressing concerns about public accountability and social consequences. So often today we discuss student well-being on college campuses, many times struggling to find causes. After speaking with students across the country and reviewing our preliminary data, I can tell you that students fear speaking out in class and that certainly has an impact on well-being."

As a preliminary analysis, this work lays the foundation for further research exploring the long-term implications of cancel culture on student engagement, mental health, and institutional policy. Future studies will seek to expand the dataset and refine the findings to better inform educators, policymakers, and researchers navigating these complex dynamics.

The Ramos Research Institute remains committed to advancing policy-driven research that informs public discourse and promotes academic freedom.
